Reflections on Photography's truth claim

EVERYTHING IS REAL

PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES

2020

Lockdown forced my landscape practice into the realms of post-photography. In this project I went back through my old photographs, reflecting on them and the photograph itself as a source of evidence and creativity. Everything is Real presents a series of architectural Rorschach tests inspired by the artist’s three year old daughter Zoë, who defiantly proclaims “everything is real!” whenever her fantasies are challenged. Despite alluding to something more fantastical – spaceships, monsters, objects from another world – everything about these photographs is actually real - the only intervention being a mirror.

STILL LIFE SHOT FLAT

PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES

2020

COVID-19 changed everything in 2020. This series of images attempts to explore my changing feelings towards the domestic and local environments I felt trapped in. Shooting images 'flat' with little or no editing seeks to mirror the emotional flatness of depression. Unable to venture far and shoot landscapes I began looking for them closer to home.

TRAVELLING WITHOUT MOVING

VIRTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES

2020

As well as offering us the ability to visit places and take virtual photographs of places we've never been before, Google Street View allows us to time travel. We can view one road at multiple points in its history, but also, as we slide from point to point along a street, we are moving in a temporal patchwork constructed from hundreds of moments and stitched together by algorithm. This virtual photography series explores the moments at which this illusion of travel breaks down - the glitches between times.

VISITATIONS

VIRTUAL PHOTOGRAPHY PROJECT

2020

Visitations is a collection of related photography series using a similar approach to Travelling Without Moving, but here the virtual lens engages in a kind of dark tourism. The project explores our uncanny new ability to visit the sites of crimes and disasters without leaving the comfort of our homes.

Visitations includes the series Searching for Fukushima.
