'LOCKED', 2018.
This is a detail from one of my photographs. I use it as my lock screen. It reminds me as I pick up my smart phone that while it may be a window on the world, it is a murky one: its reflection of reality is always distorted, layered and mediated in some way, and that it can be a barrier as much as it can be portal.
ABOUT MICHAEL C COLDWELL
Born Michael Schofield in Glasgow in 1983, Coldwell is something of a polymath: photographer, musician, documentary filmmaker and exhibiting artist, his immersive work spans multiple discplines. He is currenly living and working in Leeds, UK, where he has just completed a doctorate in photography, and lives with his partner Mary and daughters Elodie and Zoe. His visual research predominantly concerns explorations of temporality and transience, how the city changes over time, memory of place and the materiality (and immateriality) of the image itself. Other research interests include the ontology of digital media, hauntology and illusion, electronic music and field recording, the role of technology in creative practice, improvisation and experimental method. His ongoing documentary photography endeavours to explore forgotten or overlooked topographies within the post-indsutrial districts of his home West Yorkshire.
Coldwell also makes experimental music and sound art under the alias Conflux Coldwell, and as part of Leeds-based art collective Urban Exploration.
