Sugimoto at the Hayward

“All my life I have made a habit of never believing my eyes” Hiroshi Sugimoto

Sugimoto’s work has been a massive influence on my own for many years now. Like myself, he sees photography as inherently spectral - a temporal illusion as much as it can be regarded as any kind of document of reality. His minimal and monolithic photographs were the perfect fit for the brutalist Hayward Gallery on the South Bank, itself a kind of monumental time capsule. Needless to say this exhibition was superb, and a perfect fit for me too. Below are some of the photographs I took there a week ago.
